How To Ask Intelligent Questions In Class

It common for most students to refrain from asking questions even when they clearly don’t understand what they are been taught. The reason in most cases is that they are more bothered about what the rest of the class would think about their question. Do you occasionally find it difficult asking questions in class when you have difficulty? Here are few tips on how to ask intelligent questions in class.
Advertisment
Remove every form of hesitation
Try and identify the reason behind your hesitation and do away with it. Be confident in yourself and your abilities and once you can let go of whatever keeps you from asking question when you don’t understand, be it fear, doubt, panic or low self esteem you would have avoided a major hindrance to participating in the classroom.
Be polite.
You have a question or you need extra clarification, politely put up your hands and ask the lecturer to please help you out by entertaining your question.
Learn to explain yourself.
When you are finally granted audience by the lecturer, try and explain yourself as clearly as possible, for example, sir please am a bit confused with the explanation, could you please go through it one more time.
Be audible
Try and make sure that your voice is loud and clear enough for the lecturer to hear what you are saying. Imagine asking for clarification and the lecturer can’t hear what you are trying to say, this can prompt the lecturer to avoid answering your questions.
State the aspect you clearly understand.
Before asking a question make sure that you were at least listening to the lecturer while he was teaching. Then when you end up asking a question, let the lecturer know the part of the lecture you understand, this make you look smart and shows that you have actually been following the lecture.
Then state the aspect that you need further explanation.
After clearing up on the point where you understand, politely ask for help in clearing up the area where you have difficulty understanding. This should put the lecturer in a position to better understand where you need assistance thereby knowing how to better clarify your questions to make sure that you fully come to terms and understand.
Keep it simple
Don’t beat around the bush, go straight to the point and avoid asking more than what is actually needed to understand your area of difficulty. Too much information can make you get an answer that isn’t actually the solution to your problem. The fault then becomes yours and not the lecturers.
Avoid using filler words.
Refrain from using words like “um”, “ermm”, and other filler languages. These words are used when you are thinking of what to say, try as much as possible to avoid them if you want to be seen as smart and intelligent.
Lastly just ask the question.
So you have a question to ask, instead of sitting down and wallowing in your ignorance, just ask the question. The smartest people ask questions when they are in doubt or need assistance, so don’t be scared of asking a stupid question, instead be scared of not getting the best out off every lecture.

-Dustpan and brush - for cleaning up the odd mess, though most hostels should provide this

-Door wedge - an open door in freshers week is much more friendly

-Alarm clock (maybe 2 in two different locations in your room to make sure lectures are at least attempted, even if you carry on sleeping there!)
-Calculator - for sorting out finances
-Computer and/or laptop - saves on queues at deadline time
-Computer mouse for laptop - easier to use than a trackpad
-CDR's (CDRW's cheaper in long run) - for backing up work
-USB "pen drive" - carrying projects etc between uni, internet cafe, friends comp, etc. quickly, easily and RELIABLY!
-Printer - printing could take up to six hours on uni computers
-Network cable - to access the internet from the socket in your room
-Mini fridge - for beer and other items you don't want in the communal fridge
-Bedside lamp
-Mobile and charger
-Answering machine
-CD player/Hi-fi system - though better (certainly space wise) just to bring speakers and use your computer
-TV - but license fee will be costly. There will doubtless be a communal TV you can watch. Also worth considering a TV-DVD/-VCR combi or separate VCR/DVD players
-Camera - to take pictures of room and friends (to send home/put on website ... everything else people do with photos)
-Headphones - so you don't disturb others when you play music loud. You can get 'infra-red' ones that aren't too expensive and allow you to walk around while still listening to the music.
-Batteries - rechargeable (save money)
-Multi plug adaptor/extension lead - to give you more than the normal 2/4 sockets

The National Universities Commission (NUC) wishes to announce to the general public, especially parents and prospective undergraduates, that the under-listed “Degree Mills” have not been licensed by the Federal Government and have, therefore, been closed down for violating the Education Act CAP E3 Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

For the avoidance of doubt, anybody who patronises or obtains any certificate from any of these illegal institutions does so at his or her own risk. Certificates obtained from these sources will not be recognised for the purposes of NYSC, employment, and further studies. The relevant Law enforcement agencies have also been informed for their further necessary action.
NOTE: This list of illegal universities in Nigeria is not exhaustive. Updates will be made periodically.

Auchi Poly lost a fresh graduate Jatto Ekpe Queen

We got a sad news that a student from Auchi Poly had an accident on her way to Abuja as a result of that, she gave up the ghost.

According to the report we gathered the late girl Queen by name had an accident on her way to Abuja, until her death she was a student of Auchi Poly from the Department of Mass Communication HND2 2015/2016 Academic Session

May her soul continue to rest in the blossom of our lord.

94 Fed. Poly Auchi Students ARRAIGNED IN COURT OVER YESTERDAY’S VIOLENT PROTEST

Ninety four students of Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi have
been arraigned at the Magistrate court one Auchi in
connection with yesterday's violent protest.

The Student were arraigned on charges ranging from
conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting,robbery, stealing
and malicious damage.

One hundred and forty-one vehicles were damaged while
the protest lasted and forty-eight computers allegedly
carted away by rampaging students.

WAEC Releases 2016 GCE Results,13488 Results Withheld - See Performance Statistics

The West African Examinations Council,WAEC, has released the results of the 2016 Nov/Dec West African Senior School Certificate Examination, (WASSCE).
The results were announced by the Head of National Office, Nigeria, Mr Olu Adenipekun yesterday in Lagos.

According to him, “A total of 66,497 (Sixty Six Thousand Four Hundred and Ninety Seven) candidates, representing 38.50%, obtained credits in five (5) subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics. “The percentage of candidates that obtained five (5) credits and above including English Language and Mathematics in the WASSCE for Private Candidates in 2014 and 2015 was 29.37% and 20.59% respectively.
“19 (Nineteen) visually challenged candidates registered for and sat the examination in Nigeria. From this figure, 4 (Four) candidates, representing 21.05% obtained credit in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
“Of the total number of 172,699 (One Hundred and Seventy Two Thousand Six Hundred and Ninety Nine) candidates that sat the examination, 149,651 (One Hundred and Forty Nine Thousand Six Hundred and Fifty One) candidates, representing 86.65% obtained credits and above in two (2) subjects; 134,152 (One Hundred and Thirty Four Thousand One Hundred and Fifty Two) candidates, representing 77.67% obtained credits and above in three (3) subjects, while 116,133 (One Hundred and Sixteen Thousand One Hundred and Thirty Three) candidates, representing 67.25% obtained credits and above in four (4) subjects.
95,294 (Ninety Five Thousand Two Hundred and Ninety Four) candidates, representing 55.18% obtained credits and above in five (5) subjects, while 72,229 (Seventy Two Thousand Two Hundred and Twenty Nine) candidates, representing 41.82% obtained credits and above in six (6) subjects.”
Candidates have been directed to check the details of their performance on the Council’s website: www.waecdirect.org within the next twenty-four hours.

JAMB CBT Centres To Have CCTV Cameras Ahead Of 2017 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that all computer-based centres to be accredited for the registration of 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), must have Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede disclosed this at an interactive meeting held at the University Of Lagos, with the operators of CBT centres drawn from across the federation.

According to Oloyede, the move was part of the measures being taken by JAMB to avoid errors of the past and also ensure that the best is offered to Nigerians.
He noted that the new process has completely phased out cybercafé operators, adding that the computer-based centres to be accredited must have 250 desktop or laptop systems in a single room with provision for additional 25 systems as back-ups.
The board also informed the CBT operators that all the 10 fingers of candidates must be captured, and that anyone whose whole 10 fingers cannot be captured by the CBT centres should be directed to the headquarters of JAMB in Abuja, he added that this was done to avoid multiple registration by candidates.
The meeting, which was attended by thousands of computer operators from across the country, witnessed debates among participants on several issues including the suggestion for the cancellation of UTME mobile applications.

WAEC To Conduct GCE Twice A Year With Effect From 2017

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disclosed that the conduct of its examination for private candidates would be twice in a year with effect from 2017.
This was made known by the council Registrar, Dr Iyi Uwadiae, who interacted with newsmen at the Registrar’s Staff Appraisal Committee meeting held on Wednesday in Accra, Ghana.

He added that the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates known as the November/December diet for private candidates will now be conducted in January/February and August/September.
He said the measure is to ensure that many private candidates, who desire the certificate for various purposes, will have the opportunity of writing the examination and acquire the certificate.
He also added that they have concluded arrangements to commence next year. He noted that this development will not affect that of May/June, that remains once a year for all schools candidates.
He concluded by saying this is part of its mandate to render qualitative service to all member nations, the council is looking forward to a more rewarding 2017.
