Hunter mistakes friend for prey, shoots him dead

Some hunters in Ogun
The police in Ogun State have arrested a hunter, Sikiru Osideko, for allegedly shooting dead his friend, Segun Okusi, during a hunting expedition in Isara, in the Remo North Local Government Area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Osideko, who was arrested on Thursday, July 30, told the police that he shot his friend in error, as he had mistaken him for a prey during the expedition.
Our correspondent gathered that at about 4pm on Thursday, Osideko and Okusi, who were friends, as well as hunters, had gone on an expedition in a nearby bush.
It was learnt that about 30 minutes after they separated, Osideko reportedly noticed a movement in the bush and shot in the direction with his dane gun.
Okusi was said to have let out a sharp cry, which made the suspect to realise that he had shot at his friend.
Osideko reportedly rushed to the place and tried to resuscitate his friend, but to no avail.
Our correspondent gathered that Okusi died on the spot.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the matter was reported at the Isara Police Division, and Osideko was arrested.
A police source in the area told PUNCH Metro that the operatives visited the bush to take Okusi’s corpse to a mortuary.
He said, “Policemen from the Isara division visited the bush and found Okusi in a pool of blood. They took photographs and deposited the corpse in a mortuary.
“They arrested the suspect and seized the dane gun. The man has been taken to the state command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
“Such strange thing has not happened among hunters in this area. It was in the broad daylight.
“It was another hunter, one John Oseni, who raised the alarm and reported the matter to the police.”
Our correspondent gathered that the matter had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, where Osideko was reportedly assisting the police with investigations into the death of his friend.
All efforts to reach Okusi’s family for comments were not successful as of the time of report.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident.
He added that investigations were ongoing into the incident.
He said, “That incident happened in a bush near Isara.
“The two men went out for hunting, and the suspect mistakenly fired his colleague. The victim died on the spot.
“The suspect is with us, and investigations are ongoing into the matter.”

Gunmen abduct Lebanese in Niger Delta

A Lebanese national was abducted on Sunday after some gunmen who mounted a roadblock attacked his van in central Nigeria’s Niger State, a security source told Xinhua Monday.
The Lebanese, a construction engineer simply identified as Rody, was kidnapped near Ekila village, some kilometers away from Minna, the Niger State capital, the security source who was not authorised to speak to the media on the development, said.
According to the source, the Lebanese was on his way to a construction site where his company, Enerco Nigeria Limited, was executing a construction project when the incident happened.
A local police officer on patrol duty in the area said a driver identified as Isaiah Entait, attached to the Lebanese, and two civil servants were taken along by the abductors.
The duo, identified as Salihu Mustapha and Hamidu Usman, worked with the Niger State ministry of works and infrastructural development, the police officer said, adding investigation had commenced on the whereabouts of the kidnappers.

According to local sources, the kidnappers were yet to make any contact since the incident on Sunday evening. The incident occurred on the same day Nigeria’s secret police said it had arrested more than 20 kidnap kingpins across the West African country.
Kidnapping — often for ransom — is one of the major security problems in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country. Expatriates, whose firms can pay the ransom, are usually released by their abductors unhurt.
