Edo Assembly amends bill on Edo University Iyamoh

BENIN CITY— Edo State House
of Assembly has amended the
bill for a law to establish the
Edo State University, Iyamoh. With the amendment, the
university is now known as Edo
University of Iyamoh.


The
amendment was effected by
the House through the Majority
Leader's motion suspending its relevant rules to facilitate the
amendment. The amendment
was unanimously approved by
the lawmakers. The Speaker,
Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie, directed
that a clean copy of the bill be sent to the governor for his
assent.

Meanwhile, Speaker
Ativie led other principal
officers of the House on a
condolence visit to the Edaiken
N' Uselu, Crown Prince Ehenede Erediauwa on the passing away
of the Oba recently.

No Money to Mobilize Batch ‘A’ Stream 2 NYSC Corp Members

Latest report reaching us here, has it that the Director General of
the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) Brig. Gen. Sulyman Kazaure says
the board is presently at a loss as they have no funds to mobilize
thousands of prospective corps members in the Batch A Stream 2 to camp
this Friday May 20th 2016.


The General made this known to the general public while speaking with
members of the Senate Committee on Sports in Abuja on Monday, 16th May
2016.

" We are presently at a loss in NYSC now as there is no money for us
to mobilise thousands of prospective corps members in the Batch A
Stream 2 to camp this Friday. "This is in spite of efforts made by us
to get things done in that direction several weeks ago. "The problem
staring us in the face arose from the N13 billion shortfall we had in
the 2016 budget estimate which the agency made strong request for its
provision during budget defence," he said.

List of Approved Universities To Run Postgraduate Programmes (NUC)

THE National Universities Commission (NUC) has discern with great
concern that some Nigerian universities are running unapproved
postgraduate programmes, leading to the award of Masters and PhD
degrees.


The NUC has also observed that some Parastatals and Institutes are
awarding these same Postgraduate degrees, either on their own or
through unapproved affiliations with Nigerian and foreign
Universities.

Such practices are not only unethical, but also antithetical to
time-tested quality assurance best practices. The
qualifications/awards resulting therefore are not recognized.

The National Universities Commission is hereby using this medium to
notifies the general public that only the following universities have
approval to offer postgraduate programmes at the Masters'and Ph.D
levels;

List of Approved Universities For e-Learning – NUC

The Nigerian Universities e-Learning Programme is a legitimate and
well thought out pilot e-learning initiative.
It is a Public Private Partnership between the National Universities
Commission (NUC), Park Associates E-Learning Group, and four federal
universities.
Its goal is to provide new opportunities for students to access
university education in Nigeria.


The following are the approved Universities for e-learning in Nigeria.
1. University of Uyo, Uniuyo;
2. National Open University of Nigeria, Noun ;
3. Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; and
4. University of Maiduguri, Unimaid.

The students enrolled in the e-learning Programme can select any of
the following undergraduate degree programmes: i.e. Economics, Banking
& Finance, Accounting, Business Administration and Marketing for which
they have requisite qualifications. The Programme for now is only
available for candidates who wish to obtain
BSc Degree in Economics .

The National Universities Commission wishes to use this platform to
allay all fears and doubts concerning the legitimacy or NUC
endorsement of the Nigerian Universities e-Learning Programme.

This is one of the avenues that the NUC is exploring to increase
access to university education without compromising quality.
Students who are already in the Programme are advised to continue to
pursue their studies without fear and prospective applicants are
encouraged to enroll.

OSHIOMOLE'S DEPUTY CHEATS DEATH DURING ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT

Shooters on Saturday opened fire on the Edo State Deputy Governor, Dr.
Pius Odubu, and his convoy in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area
of the state. It was assembled that a policeman, an agent of the
Department of State Security and three different persons were harmed
during the assault and were taken to an undisclosed hospital.



Odubu had last Wednesday formally declared his intention to contest
the September 10 gubernatorial election in the state under the All
Progressives Congress amidst wide speculation that his decision did
not go down well with Governor Adams Oshiomhole. It was learnt that
the former lawmaker had earlier been denied access to the party's
secretariat in Fugar, allegedly on the instruction of an official at
the Government House.

Odubu was expected to meet with party delegates from the area but met
the secretariat locked. The situation was said to have angered some
delegates, who later forced the gate open to enable the deputy
governor meet with them. He was said to have left for Auchi and was
meeting with some delegates when the gunmen suddenly appeared, firing
gunshots at his convoy.

A source, who did not want to be mentioned, told punchng that Odubu
was not injured in the attack.

"No, he was not injured but two our security
men were injured. It was in Etsako West, in
Auchi.

"We ran for our dear lives. They injured a
policeman, an SSS operative and three civilians
and destroyed canopies. We learnt that they
were paid N1m to carry out the attack," the
source said.

Efforts by our correspondent to reach the
Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Osifo
Abiodun, were not successful.

Calls put across to the Chief Press Secretary to
the Deputy Governor, Mr. Kelly Odaro, also
went unanswered.

A police source confirmed the attack.
He said, "It is true from the information we
have heard."

Good News! Government Increases Minimum Wage With Immediate Effect

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole on Sunday announced the increment
of the National Minimum Wage from N18,000 to N25, 000 with immediate
effect, for employees in the State Public Service.



He also promised prompt payment of outstanding arrears of salary to
the staff of Local Government Councils in the state. Oshiomhole who
made the announcement on Sunday at the grand finale of activities to
mark the 2016 Workers Day, said that plans had also been concluded to
pay staff of Egor Local Government Council who were being owned 13
months arrears of salary, within the next two weeks. Explaining why
the council was omitted from the bailout to local government councils
in 2015, he gave the assurance that the Edo Government had been
meeting with the Central Bank of Nigeria and that within the next two
weeks, the funds would be released and staff of the council would be
paid in full.

He also explained the reason behind the non appointment of Caretaker
Committees for the 18 local government councils in the state, after
the end of the tenure of the immediate-past local government chairmen.

According to him, "rather than appoint
caretaker committees for the councils and pay
them because they are politicians, we directed
the Heads of Personnel Management in the
councils to hold forth, so that those monies
would be used to run the councils and pay
salaries," he said.

The governor said even if the price of oil goes
to zero per cent, Edo workers would get their
salary alerts before the end of every month.
He assured that he would not use his office to
put hardship on any of his workers.

Earlier, the State Chairman of the Trade Union
Congress, Mr Orhue Marshall, appealed to
government to enlist workers in the state in the
National Health Insurance Scheme.

According to him, this would enable them to
have access to quick and cheap medical
facilities, like their colleagues in the Federal
Public Service.
